Side Cutters

What is it?

Diagonal cutting pliers.

What is it used for?

Side cutters are used to cut wire and the leads (or legs) of components in electronics. They can also be used to strip the insulation from wire

About This Tool

Side cutters are used mostly for electrical tasks, cutting wire and cutting electrical component tails. Side cutters cut by indenting and wedging the wire apart. The jaw edges are ground to a symmetrical "V" shape, thus the two jaws can be visualized to form the letter "X", as seen end-on when fully occluded. The pliers are made of tempered steel, and inductive heating and quenching are often used to selectively harden the jaws.

The insulated handles improve grip and the comfort of holding the tool. The insulation is mostly rated to at least 1,000volts.
